Women and the vote
POWNAL -- The Pownal Historical Society presents "A History of Women and the Vote in Vermont: Why it Mattered Then, Why it Matters Now" with Cyndy Bittinger, at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Pownal Methodist Church. The event is free and open to the public.
"Equal rights means equal responsibility, equal justice to working men and women, equal pay for women who do work equal to that of men; in fact, the conservation of the human race." This is not a quote from Governor Madeleine Kunin. It is a quote from Annette W. Parmalee in 1917 advocating for the right to vote in Randolph,Vermont. Parmalee was a forceful advocate even nicknamed the suffrage hornet! The battle for the vote for women in Vermont was long, up to 1920 and the Susan B. Anthony amendment. Yet the movement was built on prior efforts to prohibit liquor and ban slavery in the nation (Vermont did not allow slavery).
Nowadays, we often hear of the importance of the women voter. Women may in fact sway the national election of the U.S. President. Therefore, as the slogan goes, your vote, your voice. So come and hear the history of those who lighted the way on this important issue.
The speaker, Bittinger, faculty at the Community College of Vermont where she teaches Vermont history and Women in U. S. History.
