NORTH ADAMS -- Boredom Buster art classes are a series of workshops for children ages 5 to 12. Parents are welcome, too! Instead of uttering the words "I’m bored" this summer, children can explore other adverbs and adjectives in thematic art classes that are sure to be a jolt of energy during the dog days of summer. Boredom Buster art classes will be held in Kidspace @ MASS MoCA, and will run from 9 a.m. to 11am on Wednesdays and Fridays, from July 10 through Aug. 9.
In conjunction with Kidspace Inc.’s Words & Images project, each Boredom Buster art class will focus on a different word using a range of materials. Art stations will be set up throughout MASS MoCA’s Kidspace gallery, with a variety of projects. Children can choose to immerse themselves in one art activity, or dabble in many. Classes are structured so that they can be attended as a family, or children can be dropped off to work independently.
"We’ve chosen time-tested projects that children can engage in as an exploration of materials and creativity," says Shannon Toye, Kidspace Education Coordinator. "This is not a traditional art class where you’re expected to sit and work on one particular project in a specific way."
On July 10 explore "Gooey;" on July 12, "Magical;" July 17, "Windy;" July 19, "Impressionable;" July 24, "Musical;" July 26, "Dreamy;" July 31, "Psychedelic;" Aug.
Words and Images, a three-museum collaborative project, explores the contexts in which words are used, the ways in which artists express the meanings of words visually, and the different kinds of words that can be associated with visual images. The goal of the project is to help children expand their visual vocabulary, and to understand that there are often many meanings that a single word or image may have. Each of the three Kidspace Inc. museum partners (the Clark, Williams College Museum of Art, and MASS MoCA) will develop a project focusing on its own interpretation of the theme.
The cost of the Boredom Buster art classes is $10 per child for member families and $12 per child for not-yet-members. Sign up for 5 sessions and receive a 5-percent discount, or sign up for all 10 sessions and receive a 10-percent discount. Adults join for free. Classes will include both a mindfulness activity and a healthy snack. Pre-registration is required two days in advance.
