Last night I attended the informative WilliNet open forum regarding affordable housing in Williamstown. I was glad I took the time to learn more about the current status of this important issue, because I was finally able to get a clear sense of what is being asked of us regarding the articles in the warrant we will be voting on during the Special Town Meeting April 24.
We are not voting on whether to build affordable housing or not. We are not voting on where to build housing. We are not voting on the kind of housing to build, or site plans, or financing.
It is clear and simple what we will be voting on and it boils down to this: Do we as town citizens vote to completely close off, forever, one possible site for building affordable housing, or do we keep our options open? Article 3 asks us to commit the entire Lowry property to conservation in perpetuity. Article 2 asks us to hold back 10 acres or so of the 30 acre Lowry property so that it might stay in the mix of properties to be considered for affordable housing.
I urge all Williamstown residents to come to the special town meeting on April 24 and vote yes on Article 2 and no on Article 3. Let's keep an open mind, let's explore the possibilities in more detail. This is such an important issue. Let's vote to simply keep our options open!
