In the spring of 2013, a large group of people sent a petition to the Selectboard requesting that a Special Town Meeting be held to discuss placing two conservation-controlled properties into permanent conservation.
The Town called for the Special Meeting but allowed opposing town committees to be allowed to place articles ahead of the citizens petitioners in an attempt to maneuver a vote against the petitioners.
It was a heated group that arrived for the meeting, with the town even busing a lot of misguided elderly people to the meeting to gain votes.
In a manipulative manner, the town managed to persuade the people attending the meeting to vote against taking any action and to table all actions involving these two properties until a much later date, into the fall or next Town Meeting, 2014, in order to gain "more information" about the controversial topics.
Suddenly the Affordable Housing committee has asked the Selectmen to vote to ask the Conservation Commission to release these two properties, Lowry and Burbank, from conservation control.
In addition, there is one member of the Affordable Housing Committee who is also allowed to be on the Conservation Committee - what a conflict of interest!
Is there not some action that the citizens can take to protect against these dishonest, immoral and non-ethical people who do not seem to respect the decisions in which they also participated and encouraged a vote by proposing they would not take any action in this matter.
And we wonder what is wrong with our world. I personally am disgusted with the actions of people I respected and thought to be honest. I would appreciate any advice from readers on saving our town from corrupt local government.
