WILLIAMSTOWN -- Images Cinema has entered a new age, adding a digital projector, new screen, RealD 3D, 5.1 digital surround sound and new hearing assistance devices. Images has been a continuously-operated single-screen cinema since 1916. The upgrade to digital is the most significant change to movie exhibition since the dawn of talkies, and this is a historic moment for this 96-year old cinema.
"The support of the community has been overwhelmingly generous," Executive Director Sandra Thomas said. "This transition to Digital Cinema Exhibition ensures that Images Cinema will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2016." The cinema will keep one of its reel-to-reel 35mm projectors to accommodate both formats. "The majority of our film screenings will be digital and will offer an improved viewing and audio experience for our patrons along with 3D screenings," Thomas said. "However, we show many foreign and smaller films and are the primary venue for the Williamstown Film Festival and sometimes a filmmaker or the film distributor want their film projected on 35mm and we’ll be able to do that too."
Images Cinema is located at 50 Spring St. For info: imagescinema.org.
