POWNAL, VT. -- In May 1775, following the events at Lexington and Concord, a race was on to capture the cannons at Fort Ticonderoga. Benedict Arnold, Ed Mott, and Ethan Allen’s brother Herman, all led volunteers recruited from Connecticut and Massachusetts to Vermont for the assault. On the way, all passed through Pownal, which will be the focus of Mr. Smith’s presentation.
The Pownal Historical Society annual meeting and lecture will be held on Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the Solomon Wright Public Library on Main Street.
Smith is president of the Manchester Historical Society and a trustee of the Vermont Historical Society. He has written two best-selling books: "Ethan Allen and the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga: America’s First Victory" and "The Revolutionary War in Bennington County".
