NORTH ADAMS -- At 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires will present "Transposing Broadway: The Jewish Influences on the Broadway Musical," featuring Stuart Hecht, associate professor of theatre at Boston College.
The event will take place at Congregation Beth Israel, 53 Lois St. Admission is $12.
Hecht, the editor of the New England Theatre Journal and a professional dramaturg and director, will conduct a journey through the 20th-century musical, introducing Rogers, Hammerstein, Gershwin, Bernstein and others in an insightful review of the Jewish roots of Broadway, noting that immigrants brought folk motifs, synagogue melodies, and a drive to invent new dimensions of musical theatre that shaped the successes of Broadway, Hecht will bring together both the stage-front songs and surprising behind-the-curtain stories reflecting how the American musical blossomed from Jewish beginnings.
