SHEFFIELD -- Sept. 1 is the deadline for applications to the Green Pastures Fund from nonprofit organizations or public entities within the Berkshire Taconic region.
The Green Pastures Fund was established at Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation in 1999 by an anonymous donor. The fund's mission is to preserve and encourage small, community-based agricultural ventures which might include, but are not limited to: community-supported agriculture, local farmers' markets, urban garden programs, agricultural scholarships, cooperative programming, internships, grant writing and marketing.
Last year, 14 nonprofits received support for innovative community-based agricultural programs. Past grants have supported the environmental group Greenagers' community agricultural program, establishing a farmer's market with the City of Pittsfield and creating a Right-to-Farm Awareness brochure with Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Applications will be reviewed by the anonymous fund advisors. Their recommendations will be reviewed by Berkshire Taconic's board of directors.
