NORTH ADAMS -- The Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Visitors Museum at Western Gateway Heritage State Park will present, as a participant in the Massachusetts Archaeology Month, an illustrated lecture, "U.S.S. Monitor Archaeology" on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 3 p.m.
North Adams has always claimed a connection to the great Battle of the Ironclads at Hampton Roads in Virginia during the American Civil War. This is due to the fact that a furnace works in the city created pig iron for the U.S.S. Monitor. On the 150th anniversary of the Civil War we will investigate the story of the ironclad, the battle and the archaeology involved in the recovery of the sunken ship.
Western Gateway Heritage State Park is located south of the Hadley Overpass on Route 8. The Visitors Museum is in Building 4. Information: 413-663-6312.
