WILLIAMSTOWN -- Images Cinema continues to host the work of local artists on its gallery wall, with "Sewn Utopias," a collection of recent textile work by Sadie Miller and Janet Curran. An artist reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m.
Miller and Curran first sewed together during the winter of 2006-07. After watching "The Science of Sleep" and witnessing a glorious, unexpected fireworks display, they sewed felt-quilt squares every day for the rest of the season. They also gave out free hugs during the Valentine's Day blizzard of 2007. More recently, Miller and Curran started sewing again in Greenfield and North Adams, and some of the resulting work is in this show.
"Sewn Utopia's" nostalgia, memory, fabric and thread all come together in this collective sewn utopia. Curran sews everything by hand, from old clothes with particular associated memories to thrifted fabrics that have their own mysterious histories. Miller uses fabric and thread to make small alternate universes and to spend more time with Curran.
